Come See Jim Sherraden Speak January 19th, 2010 at 5:30pm. At the Westin Poinsett in Downtown Greenville.
WHO IS JIM SHERRADEN?
Jim Sherraden is Manager, Chief Designer and Archivist at Hatch Show Print, one of America's oldest surviving show poster and design shops. Since 1984 he has overseen its transition from a cultural survivor to a widely recognized graphic design icon and destination for letterpress enthusiasts. He is the co-writer of Hatch Show Print, The History of A Great American Poster Shop, published by Chronicle Books, now in its fifth edition. He is also the creator of one of a kind pieces of art called monoprints, based on the shops archive, which are collected by individuals and institutions worldwide. He is a frequent speaker and conducts letterpress workshops from coast to coast.
WHAT IS HATCH SHOW PRINT
Hatch Show print is one of America’s oldest working letterpress design and poster print shops. Located in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, the shop has been making an impermeable impact on the world of posters and graphic design since 1879.
Historically, Hatch was best known for its woodcut posters and type celebrating the rich culture of entertainment in the American South. Posters advertising carnivals, circuses, vaudeville and minstrel acts were the largest clients, along with the Grand Ole Opry performers who needed to advertise their shows on the road.
Operating today as a non-profit division of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Hatch begins each day with the self imposed mandate of “preservation through production.” The shops’ clientele is a who’s-who of the music industry, and its customers range from Willie Nelson to B.B. King, Springsteen to the Band Next Door, from CMT to CNN.
The staff designs and prints over 600 jobs a year and hosts over 50,000 visitors annually. An exhibition of Hatch is currently being sponsored by the Smithsonian Institute, and the staff’s posters are enjoyed around the world. In addition to being featured in countless publications, the book “Hatch Show Print, The History of A Great American Poster Shop,” published by Chronicle Books, is in its fourth printing.
Hatch Show Print is a survivor and a graphic design landmark. The presentation begins with its very first job for Henry Ward Beecher and includes dozens of milestones along the meandering road of letterpress history.
